James' Story

A Story of Hope, Resilience, and the Power to Save Lives

My name is James, and my journey is one of survival, second chances, and the incredible generosity of strangers. At just 16 years old, I was diagnosed with Severe Aplastic Anaemia, a rare and life-threatening blood disorder. My immune system turned against me, attacking my bone marrow—the very source of my body’s lifeblood. Without functioning bone marrow, I could no longer produce red blood cells to carry oxygen, white blood cells to fight infection, or platelets to prevent bleeding.

Without treatment, I would not have survived.

For the longest time, I relied on near-daily blood transfusions just to stay alive. The only hope was to ‘reset’ my immune system, but this was only a temporary solution. By 2010, during my first year at university, the disease returned with full force. Time was running out, and the only cure was a bone marrow transplant—a selfless donor willing to give me a new chance at life.

That’s where Anthony Nolan stepped in.

Anthony Nolan is a lifeline for people like me. They run the UK’s stem cell registry, matching patients with donors, researching ways to improve transplants, and giving hope to those facing blood cancers and disorders. Thanks to their incredible work, a donor was found for me!

In July 2010, I underwent intense chemotherapy in isolation, wiping out my diseased bone marrow in preparation for the transplant. But life had other plans—the transplant failed.

For most patients, a second chance is rare. Finding a match is difficult, and many never get the opportunity. But because of the commitment of donors and tireless advocacy, a second match was found for me—a miracle beyond words.

So, in November 2010, I went through it all again—full-body chemotherapy with extra full-body radiotherapy, and a second transplant. This time, it worked.

Now, November 2025 marks 15 years since I was given a new lease on life. A second chance. A rebirth.

To celebrate, I am embracing a challenge that represents this journey, flying high by WING WALKING!

To raise money & Awareness; On Sunday 21st September 2025, I will be strapped to the wings of a plane, flying high to champion how you could help save someone's life.

The Stem Cell Registry And Who Is Eligible

Treating Blood Cancer & Blood Disorders:

  • All blood cells originate in bone marrow from the same type of cell, called a blood stem cell.
  • A blood stem cell (or bone marrow) transplant can replace a damaged immune system in a person with blood cancer – but only if the donor’s tissue type matches.
  • For many people with blood cancer, a transplant is their last chance of life.
  • A transplant works by taking blood stem cells from a healthy donor and giving them to someone with blood cancer or a blood disorder.
  • The donor and the recipient must have the same tissue type. As there are millions of different combinations, finding a suitable match is very complicated.

Anthony Nolan Age Range:

  • Their upper age limit is 30 because their research has shown that stem cell transplants work better if the donor is younger so they focus their limited funds on recruiting donors aged 30 and under
  • It’s driven by science. Our research shows that donors aged 16–30 provide better outcomes for patients, so we focus our time, energy and money on recruiting these potential donors.
  • It could save more lives. As we know doctors are more likely to choose younger donors, we need to use our limited resources wisely to fill our register with as many people aged 16–30 as possible, ready and waiting to save a life.
